A Contrastive Study of Chinese and Western Culture Based on The Lord of the Ring and The Journey to the West 2

The humanity essence of Chinese thought has been solidified in the social consciousness and its humanistic spirit has been a social structure and feudal institutionalization. The feudal system became incomparably powerful and China was ahead of other countries in the medieval society. But in turn, this culture not only stifled the essence of free thought, but also killed the freedom of individual character. The western history is far shorter than Chinese history, and it doesn’t have a profound historical and cultural accumulation. But at the same time, it doesn’t have the long-term bondage of feudal system. What’s more, the high liquid of population makes its culture develop in the direction of the refining pragmatism. After the forging of industrialization, “competing standard” became the basic standard of western culture. It fully mobilized the enthusiasm of people, and promoted the development of western economy. The Chinese traditional culture pays more attention to the form of project and the process of rite. But China is very good at seeking the balance of power and the coordination of every aspect and handling things in a moderate way.
In view of the limited time and resource, many questions need overcoming. In the process of collecting data and information, I could not expect participants to give proper answers and suggestions. And some precious information could not be obtained in time. I read The Lord of the Ring and The Journey to the West roughly, because they are two long. However, I will consult more historical documents to learn ancient western and eastern society and make more accurate statistics. Moreover, I will make full use of the previous research result to fill my document.
From the above brief analysis and examples, we can see the differences between Chinese culture and western culture. As a whole, western culture pay more attention to conciseness, pragmatism and accumulation of material. But apparently, it is very plain and doesn’t have a profound cultural deposit. While Chinese culture is broad and deep, and pays more attention to the abundance of the spirit and inheritance of culture. But it is relatively long and the efficiency is low. For example, the westerner’s preference to holy things and the Chinese preference to sutras reflect the different yearning of material and culture in two different cultures. Such difference between Chinese and western culture is closely related to Chinese and western process. We cannot simply tell which culture is right, but analyze it in the historical materialism viewpoint.
Chinese culture needs a completely self-update, and transcendence based on comprehension. This comprehension doesn’t refer to one or several subjects, but to modern culture. The western culture lacks a kind of cultural heritage of unity.
